According to the New York State Department of Transportation, they are advising motorists to expect traffic delays in both directions of Interstate 684 between Exit 8, which is the Hardscrabble Road exit in the town of North Salem, and Exit 9, the I-84 exit in Southeast.

The New York Department of Transportation is reporting that the area of concern will be under blast zone construction from Wednesday, January 5, through Friday, January 28. The hours when blasting will take place will be between 11:30 AM and 12 PM. It's a small window but the delays will occur on a daily basis for the entire month, weather permitting.

The side effects of blasting are “flyrock” which is a rock or rocks moving through the air or along the ground after a blast and travel beyond the blast area (security zone), and  "ground vibrations" which is a seismic wave that moves through the ground following a blast.

The State is urging all motorists who travel on I-684 during blasting times to slow down in work zones, and remember that fines are doubled for those speeding in a work zone. Also two or more speeding violations in work zones could lead to your license being suspended.

Hopefully, the construction will be addressing some of the back-up problems that happen on a daily basis during morning and evening commutes at the I-84, I-684 merge. This has been an area of concern for many years, and can be a traffic nightmare for motorists.

Interstate 684 is the primary limited-access highway through eastern Westchester County. Unlike other area highways, I-684 is known officially by its number, not by its name. Originally, this expressway was to have been part of I-87.
