‘Big Change’ Announced for the 2023 Meriden Daffodil Festival
You're already looking forward to the 2023 fairs and festivals around Connecticut, and it's only January 11th, admit it. I have some bad news for mid-state Connecticut residents, you'll have to wait a little longer for the Meriden Daffodil Festival in 2023.
I've seen announcements over the past week about upcoming 2023 fairs and festivals - "Food truck festivals, here's where we'll be this year" --etc. One announcement caught my attention, it's from the Meriden Daffodil Festival, who announced a "Big Change in 2023". What's the big change? The 43rd Annual Meriden Daffodil Festival will NOT be held on the last weekend in April. Instead, the festival is being moved to the first weekend in May 2023 - Saturday and Sunday, May 6 and 7 at the festival's traditional location - Hubbard Park.
It does seem to be big news, especially if you read the comments on Meriden Daffodil Festival's reschedule announcement, most have latched onto the idea that the daffodils themselves will be dead if they move the festival back a week, and many mention the fact that May 6-7, 2023 coincides with prom season, and their children won't be able to be photographed in front of the daffodils.
There is something to those objections, according to the Farmer's Almanac, daffodils are typically planted in the fall, usually in October, and bloom in late Winter/early Spring - March/April. Is May 6-7 pushing Mother Nature? We'll see. Maybe they planted a hardier variety? There are also 13 official daffodil flower types, and if you were born in March, the daffodil is your birth flower.
