It's a harsh reality I must come to terms with: the looming cloud of COVID-19 will remain in our lives forever. This virus, this illness, has altered the world permanently, and one of its enduring stains is the rise of remote work.

In Connecticut, a significant portion of our workforce conducts their business from home. The question remains: is this shift a positive or negative development? A recent study by WalletHub offers an argument in favor of remote work.

WalletHub dove into various metrics to identify the best states for remote workers, and the Constitution State emerges as one of the finest. The report scrutinized the following factors to reach its conclusions:

  • Percentage of Population Working From Home
  • Percentage of Potential Telecommuters
  • Household Internet Access (Connecticut ranked #2 in the U.S.)
  • Cybersecurity
  • Average Retail Price of Electricity
  • Internet Costs

After all was said and done, Connecticut claims the 6th spot as the best state in America for remote workers.

Here's a glimpse of the Top 10 Best States for At-Home Workers:

  1. New Jersey
  2. Utah
  3. Delaware
  4. Maryland
  5. District of Columbia
  6. Connecticut
  7. Washington
  8. Pennsylvania
  9. Massachusetts
  10. North Carolina

The 5 Worst States for Remote Workers are:

  1. Alaska
  2. Montana
  3. Arkansas
  4. Wyoming
  5. South Dakota

WalletHub Analyst Cassandra Happe offers insight:

“Working from home can yield substantial savings on transportation expenses and create a more comfortable, flexible work environment. Yet, factors such as energy costs, internet speed, household size, and the number of occupants can significantly influence savings and productivity. While remote jobs are feasible from anywhere, certain states enhance this practice more than others.”

This brings us to a crucial point: for those without a dedicated home office or with young children, remote work can be a struggle. I've attempted to work from home, fighting against constant interruptions; it's a massive headache. I'd rather take a cheese grater to the face than work from home on a full-time basis.

Attempting to construct a complex idea with one child tugging at your shirt and another microwaving a plate of cheese is pure chaos. I think working in an office setting is just more efficient for everyone, whether you have kids or not. Planting your feet firmly on the office floor in quiet surroundings allows for greater productivity than attempting to work from a laptop just ten feet away from where you typically doze off watching HBO.

10 Things You Never Do During a Connecticut Traffic Stop

I was reading an article recently that had this theme, and it was so generic. Frankly, a lot of it was information most of us have already heard before. I like to dig a bit deeper, find another layer, and crack into some advice you probably won't get anywhere else. "10 Things You Never Do During a Connecticut Traffic Stop."
