Almost a Decade Late, Verizon FIOS Will Be Coming to Connecticut
We're you an AT&T U-Verse subscriber in the early 2010's? Were you angry when Frontier Communications bought them out in 2015? Hold tight, a $20 billion dollar deal that was just announced will rid Connecticut of Frontier in the near future.
According to every major news outlet, including msn.com, Verizon Communications has just announced that they intent to purchase Frontier Communications' 2.2 million fiber optic network subscribers in 25 states, including Connecticut, for the bargain price of twenty billion dollars. Verizon currently has 7.4 million FIOS subscribers in nine states surrounding Connecticut: Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, and Washington DC. With this Frontier purchase, Verizon will have a solid grip on fiber in most of the major cities in New England, if not the Eastern coastline.
My personal experience with Frontier Communications was a nightmare. I was an AT&T U-Verse subscriber, when it was announced that AT&T's assets were being swallowed up by someone that I had never heard of before the announcement - Frontier. I experienced a number of technical glitches, loss of service, and billing errors over the first 6 months of Frontier service and decided to do something that wasn't easy in 2015 - switch providers.
What followed was almost another six months of miscommunication, disorganization, and apologies from Frontier, who had set up their corporate offices in Norwalk. Frontier moved out of that building just over a year ago in 2023, and now they've dumped Connecticut. Verizon expects to complete the deal within 18 months. Later Frontier Communications, it hasn't been fun for me.
