3-Alarm Fire on Greenwood Ave. Devastates Bethel, Families Displaced

A reported eight Bethel families have been displaced as a result of a three-alarm fire that raged on Greenwood Ave. late Wednesday night into the early hours of Thursday morning (July 13).

According to Bethel Fire Chief, Scott Murphy via fox61.com, the fire that started on the second floor of a building with both residential apartments and businesses took around three hours to get completely under control. Virtually every surrounding town sent fire crews to help, including Danbury, Brookfield, Stony Hill, Redding, and New Milford.

Even though the fire was already blazing out of the building's windows by the time firefighters arrived, Fire Chief Murphy told fox61.com that the the blaze barely spread to the second building.

Two of the firefighters had to be taken to Danbury hospital with some minor injuries, and the eight families (10 adults,5 children) have been put up in motels by the Red Cross.

The investigation into what caused the blaze will continue, however Murphy says there is currently no evidence of arson.

A social media post from the Stony Hill Volunteer Fire Department says that Greenwood Ave. is currently open, but asks that drivers use caution.
