A young local man has been identified as the victim in a tragic crash that happened in Newtown over the weekend.

Early Sunday morning (February 28), Newtown police reported a single-car accident that took place on Toddy Hill Road around the area of Quarry Ridge Road.

Newtown Accident Reconstruction Team investigated the scene and found that a single occupant was operating a 1999 Ford Explorer when he was traveling northbound on Toddy Hill Road. The car hit the curb and began traveling off the roadway where it struck various objects, crossed over Quarry Ridge Road, and landed on a property on the westbound side of Quarry Ridge Road. When police arrived on scene, the occupant was transported to Danbury Hospital with life threatening injuries.

Newtown Police have identified the occupant, Brandon Hensel, 22 of Newtown. Hensel was pronounced deceased at Danbury Hospital on March 1. Newtown Public Information Officer, Lt. Aaron Bahamonde released a statement regarding the incident.

It is always a tragedy whenever a young person's life ends in a tragic accident such as this, I know that our officers did their best in providing first aid, but to have this outcome it hurts. I know the town will be in mourning for the lost of this young man's life and we pray and keep the family in our minds and hearts as they deal with this tragedy. Brandon was a student at Central Connecticut and we have reached out to them to provide whatever support and comfort for Brandon's professors and classmates.
