I’m at Peace With Roxbury’s Wellers Bridge Rd. Detour
It's been an interesting Summer navigating the roadways of my commute between Torrington and Brookfield. My primary road, Rt. 202, endured a month-long closure through August, and I'm perplexed by the Wellers Bridge Rd one-way closure in Roxbury, but I'm finally accepting it.
Wellers Bridge Rd for those that don't know is a very steep roadway that many use to bypass a small stretch of Rt. 67 through town. According to the Connecticut State Police - Bridgewater/Roxbury Resident Trooper's Office, Wellers Bridge Rd has been one-way traffic Westbound only since Friday, April 25, 2025. There is no explanation as to why this roadway was changed, and no information as to how long this will continue or end.
What is Happening to Wellers Bridge Rd? I Dug This Up
I assume that the closure is due to a reconstruction project, the Connecticut Department of Transportation held informational meetings to hear opinions regarding the replacement of the bridge carrying Wellers Bridge Rd over the Shepaug River. The proposal calls for the replacement of the old two span bridge with a longer single span bridge, and a sidewalk for pedestrian use. The Wellers Bridge replacement has an estimated cost of $13.6 million dollars, and a Spring 2026 start.
In the meantime, I've actually enjoyed my trip along the one-way detour. I drink in the beautiful sights of the Shepaug River, and I've found that it really didn't add much more than a moment or two in my commute to go around it. The one thing I miss is LaBonne's in Woodbury, but I'm going to Bantam Market now, not too shabby.
