The Blizzard of 2013 Was The Worst I Remember in Connecticut
What's the worst snowstorm that you can remember in Connecticut? Our parents love bringing up the Blizzard of 1978, but the one that really had me worried happened in 2013.
With the first real snowstorm of 2025 bearing down on us, the Vic DiBitetto 'bread & milk' memes are making their annual appearance in our social media feeds. Do you worry about impending storms like this? Weather forecasters are predicting 5-8 inches for most of Connecticut tomorrow, and the mad scramble for finding a new snowplow driver has begun. I'm not concerned with the snow until a foot or more is predicted.
We live in New England in the Northeast United States. Connecticut has the money, machinery, and hard workers that can clear every roadway and sidewalk within 8 hours of the last flake. Over a foot of snow is a bit more difficult, but every decade or so we get a blizzard that whacks us.
The blizzard of 2013 was a nor'easter, a bomb cyclone, and it dumped over 28 inches of snow on my home in Waterbury. Hamden received 40 inches of snow. It's the only time besides 1978 that we truly had to dig out from underneath 4-5 foot snowdrifts. The worst part of that storm were the howling winds, which knocked power out for thousands of us for over a week around the state.
I remember driving through the West side of Waterbury trying to find a gas station that had power, they were all out in the area. Digging out from 30 inches of snow was backbreaking. Thank God I had a snowblower, it took multiple passes over hours, it was so heavy.
