An actual life size castle built from styrofoam? You betcha! It's the stuff coolers are made out of! It's a Scottish castle being built in New Caanan with styrofoam blocks filled with concrete.

Leigh Overland from Leigh Overland Architects said that this type of material is becoming increasingly popular in the U.S. The "material" is called ICF which is made out of 2.5 inch styrofoam blocks. The panels are stacked on top of each other and the concrete is poured down the middle of an 8 to 10 inch cavity.

The castle styled house is owned by a young couple who were married in a Scottish castle and have always had a love for all things medieval. They selected the ICF technology, which is mostly used in Europe and Canada, for its strength, thermal properties and thickness. Overland says that Styrofoam seals out the elements and makes the buildings much more comfortable year round. The cost? Just about the same(to build) as wood framing. What else can you do with Styrofoam?!!!
