Study Lists Connecticut as #1 State That Helps Homeless People in 2024
Homelessness is a problem for over 650,000 people in the United States in 2024, and it's something we're used to dealing with in Connecticut due to our proximity to Boston and New York City. Apparently, our state has done an excellent job at helping the homeless despite being one of the most expensive states in which to live. A new study has just names Connecticut as the #1 in the US for States That Help Homeless People the Most for 2024.
According to SmileHub.org, their experts compared all 50 states across three key dimensions in order to determine which states supported the homeless population the most, and then evaluated those dimensions using 20 relevant metrics in order to determine a 100-point scale. Some of the relevant metrics used to determine the score were overall support for shelters and housing, number of beds available, presence of non-discrimination laws, presence of state laws to increase high school graduation rate for homeless youth, charities to support the homeless, and unemployment and food insecurity rates.
Connecticut scored a 68.20 on SmileHub.org's 100-point scale, landing us at #1 overall. Connecticut was found to be the #1 state in all of the US in shelters and housing support, ranked #16 in homeless youth support, and #4 in food & health support. Our immediate neighbors did well in the rankings too with New York at #5, Massachusetts at #7. Northern New England? Not so much, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Rhode Island all landed in the bottom half of SmileHub.org's study.
Congratulations, advocates for our homeless population, you have been judged as the best in this country.
