CT’s Safe Haven Law Means Never Having to Abandon Your Newborn
Back in May of 2017, you may remember a disturbing story in which a baby was abandoned behind a downtown Danbury grocery store.
From a recent article in the NewsTimes, comes the retelling of a sad story about Anny Castillo, a 22-year-old mother who was charged with leaving her newborn baby behind that downtown grocery in May of '17. Castillo was arrested for child abandonment, risk of injury, and cruelty to persons charges on July 13, '17. She claimed she wasn't aware of the Safe Haven Law, which simply states:
You can leave your baby, up to 30-days-old, with an employee at any hospital emergency room during regular business hours in Connecticut.
It is so very important that all women are aware of the Safe Haven Law, that State Rep. Michael Ferguson is trying his best to guide a proposal through the legislature that would require the law to be taught in high schools throughout Connecticut. He even cited Amy Castillo's Danbury case to further drive his point home. Check out this YouTube video to get the full impact of Connecticut's Safe Haven Law:
