Is it Legal to Ride in the Back of a Pickup Truck in Connecticut? Everything You Need to Know
Is it Legal to Ride in the Back of a Pickup Truck in Connecticut?
I saw the most amazing thing the other day in the middle of that brutal cold snap. I saw a guy riding in the back of a pickup truck. No cab. No cover. Just vibes, frostbite, and pure New England resolve.
First, I was genuinely impressed. That’s commitment. Then my brain kicked in and I immediately wondered: wait… is it even legal to ride in the back of a pickup truck in Connecticut?
Because let’s be honest, we all did it when we were kids in the ’80s and ’90s. Tossed in the bed, holding onto nothing, parents up front smoking cigarettes like seatbelts were optional and danger was theoretical. Nobody cared about our well-being back then. But times change, laws change, and lawsuits definitely change.
So what’s the deal now?
According to the State of CT, the law mainly focuses on kids, not adults. Connecticut General Statute §14-272a lays out restrictions on minors riding in the back of pickup trucks or open-bed vehicles. In short, children are not supposed to be riding back there, with limited exceptions, because—shocker—it’s dangerous.

What the law doesn’t do is flat-out ban adults from riding in the back of a pickup truck statewide. If you’re 18 or older, Connecticut doesn’t explicitly prohibit you from climbing into the bed and braving the elements. That doesn’t mean it’s a great idea, and it doesn’t mean local police can’t get involved if things look unsafe, but there’s no blanket “no adults allowed” rule on the books.
So that guy I saw during the cold snap? Technically, probably legal. Practically? Absolutely unhinged. Spiritually? A throwback to a time when we all survived things we probably shouldn’t have.
The takeaway here is pretty Connecticut: kids are protected by law (as they should be), adults are allowed to make questionable life choices, and winter will always find a way to test your limits. Just because you can ride in the back of a pickup truck doesn’t mean you should—especially when it’s 12 degrees and your face is becoming a science experiment.
Still, respect to that guy. Somewhere, every ’90s kid nodded in approval.
