If you grew up anywhere within a reasonable driving distance of New York City, you already know this is true: we don’t say a city—we say the city.

Not “I’m going to a city.” Not even “I’m going to NYC.” It’s just the city. No explanation needed. Everyone knows what you mean.

And here’s the thing—even if you didn’t grow up in New York, you should still agree with this. Because once you experience it, the hierarchy becomes obvious really quick.

Let’s be honest for a second. Put Hartford up against New York City. That’s not even a competition, that’s a scrimmage. Hartford has its moments, sure, but nobody has ever said, “Hey, let’s spend the weekend in the Hartford.” It doesn’t hit the same. It never will.

And before anyone jumps in—yes, there are other big cities. Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston—they’re all legit. Great food, big skylines, plenty going on. But none of them have that gravitational pull where the entire surrounding region just refers to it as the city like it’s the main character of the country.

New York City is different. It’s not just size or population—it’s presence. It’s the energy, the pace, the feeling that something important is happening whether you’re part of it or not. It’s the fact that people plan entire days around going there, like it’s an event, not just a location.

So yeah, when people from Connecticut—or Jersey, or upstate New York—say they’re heading into the city, they’re not being vague. They’re being accurate.

Because when it comes down to it, there are a lot of cities in America.

But there’s only one The City.

I live just down the block from the Wooster Street Cemetery and whenever I pass, I am always struck at how odd it is. You have this quiet, beautiful place that is dedicated to the people who were buried there, in the middle of a busy city and almost no one ever goes there. I decided to go take a deeper look around and see what was beyond the iron gates and stone walls.
