Looking For Connecticut Clam Chowder on National Clam Chowder Day
Today is February 25, 2022, Happy National Clam Chowder Day everyone. If you are reading this, you love clam chowder as much as I do. It's one of my favorite comfort foods. There are many regional varieties of clam chowder, but there aren't many places in Connecticut that sell a Connecticut clam chowder.
Most of you know the classic varieties: Creamy New England, tomato-red Manhattan, and clear broth Rhode Island. I discovered that there is a Connecticut clam chowder, and it's recipe, just last Fall. Today that I discovered that there is a clam chowder mutation out there known as Long Island clam chowder, have you ever heard of it?
Apparently, it's been around for over 10 years. According to longislandpress.com, Long Island clam chowder is a mix of half New England white, and half Manhattan red. I've never seen Long Island clam chowder in a Connecticut restaurant, but I found two places, so far, that serve a clam chowder mix that could be defined as "Connecticut". The first is CT Chowder Company in North Haven, their "Connecticut clam chowder" is a mix of all three - creamy, red, and clear. Another one is the Captain Bill's Chowder Combo at Close Harbour Seafood in Plantsville. Close Harbour mixes New England creamy with Rhode Island clear. According to the recipes that I could find, Connecticut clam chowder is a mix of Rhode Island clear and New England Creamy.
After the snowstorm that we had here in Connecticut this morning, and it being National Clam Chowder Day, here's a few places that make excellent clam chowder -
- Close Harbour Seafood - Plantsville
- Tony & Sons - Oakville
- Chowder Pot of Hartford
- CT Chowder Co. - North Haven
- Wood-n-Tap - Throughout CT
