A $199 Bottle of Beer Is Headed to Connecticut — Would You Buy It?
What price is too high a price to pay for something special?
To me, the thing about many craft beers is the out of the ordinary taste they offer. Unusual ingredients, unique barrel ageing, the chance to taste something different. It can be an extraordinary experience for sure, but what are you willing to pay for it, how high would you go?
The website for the company that many New Englander's think of as one of their own just announced the return of an out of the ordinary beer.
Here's what samueladams.com has to say about this craft beer:
We're excited to announce the 10th release of Samuel Adams Utopias, the craft beer community’s most renowned and sought-after extreme barrel-aged beer
Extremely sought after it appears, for a few reasons. Utopias is only released every two years, and it's alcohol content is 28% ABV ( alcohol by volume ) which puts it in the illegal range in parts of the country. The Samuel Adams website says Utopias is not shipped to or sold in 12 states including: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Washington.
Good news though for Connecticut, New York and Massachusetts residents. If we can find it, we can buy it. And if you read the mouth watering description found on samueladams.com you'll start to get the sense that it won't be cheap!
The 2017 release is a blend of batches, some having been aged up to 24 years in a variety of barrels. To create this year’s one-of-a-kind vintage, the 2017 recipe includes Utopias aged in a variety of barrels including new Scandinavian Aquavit barrels as well as a portion of the final blend aged in Moscat barrels, a first time for the beer.
The price tag, by the way, is $199 per bottle. You can hunt down a bottle of Utopia using the Sam Adams beer finder tool. Then maybe you need to indulge you entrepreneurial side and take a road trip to some states in need.
