According to a press release from the CT State Police, a Hartford man is facing a long list of charges after what police say was a dangerous attempt to outrun troopers on I-84 through eastern Connecticut.

Police say the whole thing allegedly started around 6:40 p.m. on January 11, when a trooper spotted a white Nissan Maxima driving erratically near Exit 67 in Tolland. According to police, the car was reportedly making unsafe lane changes, failing to signal, and struggling to stay in its lane. A registration check showed the plates were canceled and didn’t even belong to that vehicle. When a trooper tried to pull the car over near Exit 68, police say the driver took off, allegedly shutting off the headlights and speeding through traffic at more than 90 mph. Troopers reportedly broke off the pursuit under state policy, but concern ramped up when a 911 caller soon reported a white car flying down the highway with no lights on.

According to police, the vehicle was later seen again near the Union line, where the driver allegedly fled a second attempted traffic stop. Not long after, police say the car lost control exiting I-84 at Exit 74, left the roadway, hit a tree stump, and overturned. The driver reportedly ran from the crash but was caught a short distance away by troopers. Police identified him as 25-year-old Youry Jawaan Smith of Hartford, who was allegedly on parole, unlicensed, and showing signs of alcohol impairment. Troopers say suspected marijuana packaged in a way consistent with sale and multiple alcohol containers were also found in the vehicle.

Smith was reportedly taken to the hospital for crash-related injuries and later held at the Hartford Correctional Center on a $100,000 bond. According to police, he’s scheduled to appear in Rockville Superior Court on January 12.

Want to Move Out of CT? Skip Florida, These Foreign Lands Are Better Options

If you live in Connecticut, chances are you’ve thought about moving — probably more than once. Warm weather, beaches, and palm trees all sound great, until you remember Florida also comes with dinosaurs in the canals and bugs the size of volleyballs. I lived there for a bit, and let’s just say the honeymoon phase ended fast.

Instead of packing up and hauling down to America’s filthiest swamp, maybe consider these foreign lands instead. I’ve identified five affordable and beautiful countries where your dollar can really go far.

My research included, but was not limited to, sources like Forbes, MSN, and Expatsi. Here are five countries you might want to bring up at your next family meeting.

Highest Nip Sales in Greater Danbury for 2025

Nips are one of Connecticut’s great divides—people either love them or hate them. Fans say they’re fun and harmless; critics say they’re trash, literally. The state’s Nickel-Per-Nip program was meant to clean things up by sending five cents from every sale back to local towns, but opinions are split on whether it’s working. According to Wine & Spirit Wholesalers of Connecticut, the stats below cover the April 1–Sept. 30, 2025 period for the Greater Danbury Area.
