A new study just released by WalletHub.com has ranked how hard the average worker works by state across the US, and Connecticut has landed just below the middle of the pack. According to WalletHub.com's Hardest-Working States in America(2025) Connecticut is the 29th hardest-working state this year.

How and Why Did Connecticut Rank Just Below the Middle of the Rankings?

In order to determine which US state works or loafs harder than the others, WalletHub compared the 50 states across two key dimensions: Direct Work Factors and Indirect Work Factors. Then they evaluated those numbers using ten key metrics: Average Workweek Hours, Employment Rate, Share of Households Where No Adults Work, Share of Workers Leaving Vacation Time Unused, Share of Engaged Workers, Idle Youth, Average Commute Time, Share of Workers with Multiple Jobs, Annual Volunteer Time Per Resident, and Average Leisure Time Spent per Day.

Among our neighbors in New England Connecticut ranks in the middle also, with New Hampshire in the Top 10 overall at #7, Maine at #21, Vermont at #22. Who did we beat? Massachusetts was ranked at #38, and Rhode Island bringing up the rear at #48.
