Even Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont Wants Us to Play ‘Freebird’
I've been working at classic rock stations here in Connecticut for 33 years, and I can tell you that I've received more requests to play 'Freebird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd than just about every other song. It's a universal favorite, and I just found out that the Governor of the State of Connecticut Ned Lamont wants you to listen to it too.
Our Governor has just released Governor Lamont's 2023 Summer Playlist on Spotify, and it seems that he has a diverse taste in musical styles. I'll take you through the list. Lamont leads off the list strong, with the Grateful Dead's classic 'Truckin'. What a long, strange trip it's been, eh Ned? Governor Lamont follows the opening track from the Dead with a shocker - Bad Bunny & Grupo Frontera's 'un x100to'. I'm not going to list every track, but there are a few more that surprised me.
I respect Lamont's deeper-cut choices of Keith Richard's cover of Eric Clapton's bluesy 'Key to the Highway', Bill Wither's 'Lovely Day', and Tom Petty's 'Time to Move On'. Ned loses me though with Harry Styles 'As it Was', that damn xylophone hook had me at first, but now it makes me cringe. I was also surprised at Beyonce's 'Love on Top' and 'My Shot' from the original Broadway Cast Recording of Hamilton. But our Governor fills out his Spotify list strong with Connecticut's own John Mayer's 'Waiting on the World to Change', 'Get Up, Stand Up' from Bob Marley, and Bob Dylan's 'Tangled up in Blue'. Take that Governor Hochul, let's start a Governor's Spotify Playlist border war between Connecticut and New York.
