From Pocket Bikes To EBikes, A Connecticut Evolution Unfolds
Someone in our condo complex dumped an old pocket bike the other day, but I snagged this pic before it went. Remember these things? They were the scourge of big city Connecticut until E-bikes came along.
Growing up in the 70's-80's, there were a few kids around Waterbury that had mini-bikes, nobody had Vespas then, but quite a few mopeds were around. In the late 90's into the early 2000's pocket bikes exploded in popularity, these were the lawnmower engine-powered mini-bikes of the past beautifully redesigned to look like a baby motorcycle. Kids in Waterbury, Hartford, New Haven, New Britain and New London started whizzing these tiny machines up to 30MPH down sidewalks and any roadway a normal-sized vehicle couldn't fit.
Legislators soon began legislating, and pocket bikes slowly disappeared from the city streets into almost oblivion. Then came the E-bike. I'll never forget how shocked I was when one passed me for the first time on a roadway. These were bicycles powered by a magical engine that fit inside the bike frame. Well, as of October 1, 2025, the formerly free-wheelin' E-bikes riders who call Connecticut home will wake up to a few new rules and regulations.
As of next Wednesday in Connecticut:
- If your e-bike has no pedals, and has over 750 Watts it will now be classified as a motor-driven cycle, and you will need a license
- If your e-bike has over 3,5000 Watts, it will be classified as a motor vehicle, which will need a registration and insurance.
Also, if your e-bike is modified, it will have to be labeled as such, and Connecticut will enforce an e-bike helmet law for all riders of any age. But, if your e-bike is under 750 Watts and has pedals? No license, no registration, no insurance? No problem.
