New York Cop Pleads Guilty After Investigation Into On-Duty Drug Sales
According to Syracuse.com, a former police officer in Upstate New York has admitted to selling drugs while he was supposed to be on the job protecting the public.
Reports say Michael Tapscott, a former officer with the Geneva Police Department, recently pleaded guilty in Ontario County Court to dozens of drug-related charges. According to WROC, the plea deal will land the 13-year police veteran 16 weekends in jail along with five years of probation.

Authorities say Tapscott’s arrest last year shocked the community because of the circumstances surrounding the alleged sale. According to WHAM, investigators say he sold dextroamp-amphetamine, a generic form of Adderall that requires a prescription, to someone at a used car dealership along Route 14. What made the situation even more troubling, police say, is that Tapscott was reportedly on duty at the time and driving a marked police vehicle.
Tapscott resigned from the Geneva Police Department on May 6, just one day before he was officially charged with criminal sale of a controlled substance and official misconduct, according to reports. Before leaving the department, he also worked as a D.A.R.E. instructor, the program known for teaching kids to stay away from drugs.

The case grew even bigger as the investigation continued. WROC reports that prosecutors later added several more charges, including multiple counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal sale of a controlled substance, and additional counts of official misconduct.
According to the Democrat & Chronicle, the investigation began in April of 2025 after the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office received a tip that a uniformed officer may have sold drugs while inside a marked patrol vehicle. Sheriff David Cirencione later said a joint investigation with neighboring sheriff’s offices allegedly found Tapscott had solicited members of the public — and even fellow officers — to buy and sell drugs both on and off duty.
Authorities say three other people were also indicted in connection with the case, including a Geneva police sergeant, another former officer, and a civilian.
Geneva is located in New York’s Finger Lakes region, roughly 50 miles west of Syracuse and about 40 miles southeast of Rochester. Officials involved in the case say they hope the plea will allow the community and the Geneva Police Department to begin moving forward.
