Barstool’s El Pres Calls New Haven the Pizza Capital of U.S.
Barstool's Dave Portnoy is backing Connecticut's plan to make pizza the state food. Tuesday he tweeted:
Let me settle this once and for all, the pizza capital of the United States is New Haven CT. Anybody who says otherwise is wrong.
Ever since, people have been going ballistic, attacking him on Twitter and asking why not New York? Why not New Jersey?
Portnoy's tweet came as the internet debate was heating up over The Proposed House Bill 5656 to make pizza the official food of Connecticut. The bill was drafted by Rep. Patricia Dillon and Sen. Gary Winfield and has been submitted for the 2021 legislative session.
This is really old news. "El Pres" raved about Frank Pepe's back in 2018 while touring New Haven for his pizza review series. His new tweet tied him to the proposed bill in the news and the last six people on Earth who didn't know who he was, learned.
Twitter is a fiery hellscape where the weak are eaten. It doesn't matter what the talking point is, someone will take you to task on any opinion you share and make you cry. So it does not surprise me that people went after Portnoy for this.
I grew up in New York, I live in Connecticut and I'm torn. I think New York has the most, great pizza places, CT has one of the best pizza places (Pepe's) and New Jersey has Maruca's Pizza in Seaside Heights. Maruca's is so good, I'd punch a loved one in the face over the last slice.
It's one of those rare cases where I can see all sides, assuming the sides are NY, CT and NJ.
Let's end this debate once and for all because this story has had the entire country at odds for a week.
P.S. The debate is always fun to have, so long as someone from Chicago does not chime in. The thing they call pizza is delicious, it's also not pizza.
