Danbury Leaders Welcome Plan to Convert 200 Vacant Hotel Rooms Into Furnished Apartments
The City of Danbury is progressing toward the approval of converting the Crowne Plaza Hotel into two hundred luxury furnished apartments.

This development project has encountered significant delays due to zoning change issues. The breakthrough occurred during a public hearing on March 19th. Danbury City Council member Paul Rotello told Hearst CT Media “This seems like a fascinating project, and I’m confident it will be a great addition to Danbury's housing inventory.” The Crowne Plaza is easily visible from I-84 when traveling in either direction, eastbound or westbound.
Over the years, I fondly remember the outrageous bangin' parties I-95 organized for our listeners at the Crowne Plaza, particularly our first two Beach Parties! If I recall correctly, this happened in the mid to late 80s. The hotel even brought in copious amounts of sand to create a massive sandbox in the middle of the dance floor. I remember how traffic on I-84, both eastbound and westbound, was backed up for miles as everyone tried to get to the hotel! Oh, the stories I could share! Can you guess who's who in the photo below?
The project's developer, Dan Bertram, told Hearst CT Media, “In addition to the exciting maker space and amenities, we aim to fulfill a need in Danbury for a quality living environment at an affordable price point.”
If successful, the plan envisions transforming the 240-room hotel into vibrant studio and one-bedroom apartments complemented by a dynamic restaurant, an inviting cocktail lounge, and a captivating art gallery. Studio apartments will be available for approximately $1,250, while one-bedroom apartments will be priced at $1,775.
What's the next step for the developers for the Crowne Plaza Danbury apartments?
If the Planning Commission gives the green light, we could start seeing the work begin on this exciting project as early as summer 2025! The construction will include cozy interior updates, refreshing common areas, and modernizing building systems.
