Could a Plastic Bag Tax Become a Reality in Connecticut?
I keep quite a few canvas recycling bags in my trunk. Yes, I'm that person. But I do still make use of plastic bags in the grocery store when I forget to bring my own in, or I'm only making a small purchase. That may change.
In a move that would affect our wallets, but be good for Connecticut State parks, a plastic bag tax may soon become a reality.
According to courant.com Connecticut's Environment Committee, an arm of the legislature, is giving its approval to a bill that would require a five cent charge for supermarket plastic bags.
Now before you get your panties all in a wad, the idea behind it is for money raised by the fee to be used to improve Connecticut's state park system. Legislatures say that a lot of funding for our park system has been drastically cut over time and they hope that this would lend a hand.
Frankly, I'm not a huge fan of all of that plastic clogging up landfills, but I am a fan of our amazing state parks. I also think the charge would hurt a lot of people who have no means or interest in using the parks. Hopefully, other options will be on the table for discussion.
Nothing is written in stone yet, because the measure has to go through at least one more committee before it can reach the floor of the House or Senate for a vote.
