From Classrooms to Lunchrooms: The Debate Over Cell Phones in CT Schools
Ah, the great classroom showdown of 2025: teachers versus TikTok, algebra versus Instagram, and Ridgefield High School smack in the middle of it.

Across the United States, schools are increasingly rethinking the role of cell phones in classrooms, and Connecticut is no exception. While nearly 77 percent of U.S. public schools already prohibit phone use during class, a growing number of districts are exploring stricter, full-day bans to curb distractions and promote healthier learning environments.
According to Hearst CT Media, one of the parents advocating for an outright ban on cellphones at the high school is Jackie Britt-Friedman, a clinical child psychologist at the Yale School of Medicine.
Ridgefield Joins National Trend Toward Stricter Cell Phone Restrictions
Connecticut’s state leadership has also taken notice. In 2024, the State Board of Education issued a policy statement encouraging districts to keep phones “off and out of sight” during the school day. A new law, set to take effect with the 2025–26 school year, requires every local school board to adopt its own annual smart-device policy. This ensures that, at a minimum, every district has a clear stance on usage.
Danbury-Area School Policies for Cell Phones in the Classroom
- Henry Abbott Tech: All cell phones and wearable tech must be kept in students’ backpacks or lockers.
- Bethel Public Schools: Use of smart/personal devices during class periods is totally off limits.
- New Fairfield: In high school: phones not allowed during class time. Students are required to put devices in a “classroom phone holder” for the duration of class, including when they leave for restrooms.
- Brookfield: No phones in class; stored in holders; no access even with hall passes, except by IEP/ accommodations.
- Newtown: Restrictive policy in place; phones locked in pouches during building hours; discipline for misuse, but classroom-time details less specific publicly.
- Danbury: I could not find a source for a specific cell phone policy for the 2025/2026 school year(s).
