According to the Fairfield Police Department and the Connecticut Department of Transportation, studies have shown that traffic signals that have been properly timed can reduce crashes by as much as 14%, reduce our delays, accident rates, and pollution from our emissions.

How does anything happen in Connecticut? Multiple surveys and studies have to be done first. So if you happen to live or work in Fairfield, expect the following traffic signals to be inspected over the next few weeks -

• Black Rock Turnpike
• Brentwood Avenue
• Chambers Street
• Grasmere Avenue
• Kings Highway East
• Mill Plain Road
• Park Avenue
• Old Town Road

The last mass traffic signal change that I remember that truly made a difference was along Main Street S in Southbury. Before the study in Southbury, you got caught at every single traffic light between the Southbury Plaza and the Shoprite Plaza, I used to have to stop at Denmo's to get a dog for energy during the wait.

The next town that should study traffic signal timing is New Milford. My commute is all 202 now, and the 67/Grove Street/CVS/New Milford Hospital stretch, with Bridge Street and Rt 7 traffic, is getting a bit much.
