The Rye Police Department issued an alert to the public on Friday, September 6th that read:

"We have been made aware of a new extortion type of e-mail scam that residents have been receiving. The e-mail contains personal information including but not limited to the homeowner’s address, first and last name as well as a picture of their home that is taken from google maps. The e-mail then instructs the recipient to send money via a Bitcoin QR code. If you receive this e-mail you can file a complaint via the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) ic3.gov and delete the e-mail. DO NOT SCAN THE BITCOIN QR CODE OR SEND ANY MONEY TO ANYONE."
They also attached screenshots of what the e-mails look like.

Hot Take 1 - Can people please just get jobs already!!!? I work my ass off for my money. Not only do I not have enough of it to go around but I have weasels trying to steal it at every turn.

Hot Take 2 - I ignore any email that is not from my job and I never answer the phone. This aggravates my loved ones something fierce but at least it insulates me from 67% of all scams. To stay safe and keep your money, you need to go in your bedroom closet and hide under a blanket and never leave.

Hot Take 3 - I love Rye Playland.

We talked about the scam on the Tuesday (09/10/24) edition of the I-95 Morning Show
