On Sunday just before 1 a.m., police in Columbia County responded to reports of a woman who was hit by a car on the Taconic State Parkway, approximately one mile south of State Route 203, in the town of Austerlitz.

Investigators determined a southbound 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by 30-year-old Ernest Sigler of Ancram, hit 25-year-old Fiona Tobin of Albany who was walking north in the southbound lane of travel, police say. Tobin died at the scene.

After a further investigation, deputies found a 2016 Nissan Altima two miles from the accident. Police believe Tobin's Nissan drove off the Taconic State Parkway, down an embankment and struck a tree, prior to her being fatally hit.

The accident is still under investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning at Ellis Hospital.
