When Snow Covered, These are the Worst Highways in Connecticut
There are just some highways in Connecticut that I will not go near when it's snowing out. I hate the risk of getting stranded behind petrified drivers or a battalion of D.O.T trucks. Some of our highways are worse than others when it gets sloppy, these are the three that I never go near when snow covered.
What's the longest time that you've been stranded in your vehicle on a snow-covered highway waiting for a snowplow to come to your rescue? For me that record is 5 hours. I know it's nowhere near the 24 hours some of you spent during the Blizzard of 78, but it felt like an eternity. That highway that I was stuck on is the beast we all know as I-84. I-84 is brutal during heavy snowstorms anywhere in Connecticut. Why? I've noticed that 84 is usually the dividing line between rain and ice and snow, and the elevation changes are brutal. Danbury, Southbury, Middlebury, Cheshire, New Britain, Hartford, Tolland, and Union are all cities that 84 passes through, with major interchanges, and big hills.
The second worst highway to get stuck on in a snowstorm is the Merritt/Wilbur Cross Parkway/Rt.15. There are miles of this highway with no shoulders, nowhere to safely pull off, and without the heavy commercial vehicles and tractor trailers packing the snow down it can turn into an ice rink.
Rt. 2 is my choice for the third worst highway in Connecticut when it snows. Once you get past Glastonbury, there's not much until you get to Norwich and the casinos. On snowy days, the big hills and curves can be terrifying.
