Waterbury’s Tractor Trailer Destroyer Goes Away This Weekend
Rejoice oversized-vehicle and tractor trailer drivers, one of the banes of your existence is making its final appearance in downtown Waterbury this weekend.
According to the Office of Waterbury Mayor Paul Pernerewski, the old railroad bridge that crosses West Main Street between Thomaston Avenue and Sperry Street in downtown Waterbury, responsible for hundreds upon hundreds of oversized-vehicle crunches due to its 12-foot clearance, is finally coming down forever this weekend.

It's not going to be pretty according to the advisory from Mayor Pernerewski, West Main Street is scheduled to be completely closed between Thomaston Ave and Sperry Street for at least a few days. The Connecticut Department of Transportation will bring in their massive bridge destroyers from Friday, March 21 all the way through Monday, March 24, 2025.
This has been a long time in the making, with an incredible amount of coordination needed between the State of Connecticut, Metro North, and the City of Waterbury to get this project done. Big congratulations to Mayor Pernerewski, and former Mayors O'Leary and Jarjura, who got this process and project started during their terms.
One down Waterbury, and there is still one to go. There is another, dare we say even more diabolical tight 12-foot -7' squeeze in town, and it's on Bank Street.
I used to love watching the social media feed from Brass City Tattoo when it was located here, it seemed that at least two or three unknowing souls took a left out of Home Depot hoping for a quick trip into Brooklyn or Town Plot every day that accordian'd the top of their vehicle on this thing.
