The State of Connecticut has prioritized the remediation of brownfields, former factories, and old industrial sites in recent years, and a new round of grants have just been released. A beautiful building left to rot in the heart of my hometown will get a closer look soon because of one of these.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont has just announced the release of another $20 million dollars in sweet State Grants to be used to support the remediation and redevelopment of 21 blighted properties in 18 Connecticut municipalities. Seven towns in Fairfield, New Haven, Litchfield Counties in Western Connecticut will receive a piece when the grants are released.

Ansonia will receive $200,000 to start the process of repurposing the former Ansonia Opera House at 100 Main Street. Naugatuck will receive $1,375,000 to remediate the parking lot located at 0 Maple Street, which will then be used to build a mixed residential/commercial space. Newtown will receive $610,000 for remediation of a duplex at Fairfield Hills.

Torrington will receive two state grants, one in the amount of $200,000 to assess 21.5 acres of land at 535 Migeon Ave, and another $200,000 grant for the assessment of the Yankee Pedlar Inn at 93 Main Street. The assessments on the 1.62 acre site will establish the first steps needed to prop up this historical site for possible redevelopment. What does Torrington need? A cat cafe, you say? We just got one.

The Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development's Brownfield Remediation and Development Program has used $530 million dollars of private investments to create 1,392 new housing units, and facilitated the growth of new business throughout Connecticut.
