I Helped Connecticut Stay Warm Just By Eating My Bacon and Eggs
I noticed a sign in the entrance at Jackie's Restaurant in Bantam the other morning, it said that "The cooking oil from Jackie's Restaurant is being converted into clean burning biodiesel to heat homes and power vehicles throughout Connecticut." Yay me?
Every few months another criminal gets caught stealing used cooking oil from a restaurant in Connecticut, it makes me think there's got to be a cleaner way for criminals to make a few bucks? Just last week the Hartford Courant reported that two men were arrested after a restaurant owner in Ellington, Connecticut caught them red and greasy-handed stealing his restaurant's used cooking oil. I learned very early on that pouring hot oil, fat, or grease down a sink is a very bad thing. Any hot oil, fat, or grease poured down will eventually solidify and clog up your pipes.
According to ct.gov, the used oils, grease, and fats cooked off from numerous restaurants around our state is being converted into biodiesel, and animal feed. Used oils and fats are filtered to remove water and all the little flakes of food that fell off, mixed with alcohol and a catalyst, and the end result of that chemical process leaves us with biodiesel and glycerin. The circle of life, just from eating greasy bacon? Yes, it happens.
The next time that a soybean powered bus pulls up next to you in Hartford, or you catch a lift with CTfastrack, take a whiff, you might smell some of the great offerings from your local favorite?
