Well, we all knew it would be bad. They told us it would be. But it sucks. The traffic caused by the I-84 Waterbury construction project, just sucks so bad.

This was what it looked like at 10 pm on Sunday night:

Even this lady think it's gotten way worse, according to NBC Connecticut:

The $300 million project will add an additional travel lane and full shoulder lanes along with various safety upgrades to the 2.7 mile stretch of  Interstate 84 between Washington Street, east of Pierpot Road in Waterbury.

Get all of the construction details here.

Bad news: is it won’t be completed until June 2020. With any luck, the contractors will reach their incentive goals to finish up in Aug. 2019.

Good news: The project aims to improve safety and decrease existing congestion, while increase the highway’s capacity. The project’s website also says that it will improve congestion and reduce traffic on nearby local streets. You can get some more facts on the project here.

Traffic has always been terrible on I-84. Connecticut Today does a great job of explaining why here. So, basically it’s just going to be worse before it gets any better.

Here’s what we can do about:

  • Read up on the project with the sites articles and public information under the “News and Resources” tab.
  • Get construction alerts, view maps, get detour information and watch local traffic cameras here.
  • Websites like TomTom  and apps like Waze can help you plan a route that avoids traffic.
  • Have your say! The project's planners are holding informational sessions and are looking for feedback. The sessions will be held during weekdays until Friday, May 1 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday and May 2 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., in Christ Church Cathedral Auditorium, at 45 Church St. in Hartford.  Get more info on these stations from NBC Connecticut here.
