Tri-state Area Falls Short In Green City Competition
Do you pay attention to your carbon footprint? Do you recycle anything that is recyclable? Are you under the impression that we live in a part of the world that cares about these types of things? Maybe not.
From an outsider perspective, Southern New England and the tri-state area are environmental cleanup nightmares, the population is concentrated around major cities, but there are vast areas of Northern New England that are pristine. A new study has just been released ranking the Top 100 Greenest Cities in America for 2025, and only one New England city has made the cut.

WalletHub.com has just released Greenest Cities in America in 2025, where they've ranked the 100 largest cities across the US across 28 key green indicators. Some of the indicators used were air quality index, greenhouse gas emissions, water quality, population density, light pollution level, average commute time, intersection density, alternative fuel stations per capita, farmers markets and CSA programs per capita, and the presence of a plastic bag ban.
Only one city in all of New England ranked in the study - Boston at #15, while New York City landed at #27.
New York City was found to have the lowest percentage of commuters that drive in the country for 2025, while Boston landed at #5. The subways and T's are the crowning jewel for the Northeast corridor, and the data backs it up. Connecticut has made an intense push to adopt green laws and practices in the past few decades, maybe Hartford will rank in the future?
