I absolutely love the tournament, but I can’t help feeling like it’s just not the same as when I was growing up. I’m convinced I was lucky enough to experience the golden era of men’s college hoops. Back then, we had Michigan’s iconic "Fab 5," the legendary UNLV "Running Rebels" led by Coach Tark, with stars like Larry Johnson, Greg Anthony, and Stacey Augmon. There was also Duke’s powerhouse Blue Devils, featuring Christian Laettner and Bobby Hurley. And who could forget players like Allen Iverson, Stephon Marbury, Shaquille O'Neal, Donyell Marshall, Vince Carter, Harold Miner, Big Country, Keith Van Horn, Glenn Robinson, and Felipe Lopez—the list goes on and on.
Another thing that made that era special: student-athletes had to stay in school for all four years to be eligible for the NBA Draft. Over that time, you really got to know the players—their personalities, their growth on and off the court—and nobody transferred. It was a different time, and honestly, I feel like it’s all changed for the worse now.
