Connecticut’s Favorite NFL Team May Come as a Surprise to You
If you think that Connecticut has never had their own NFL team, you'd be wrong.
In the 1920's, the Hartford Blues represented the Nutmeg State in the NFL, but they were disbanded by 1927 as the league sought bigger markets. Since then, it's been an odd NFL identity for the State of CT. No matter where you look, research, or read, CT's fandom boils down to three teams, the Patriots, Giants and Jets.
So which is the most popular in the state? According to Sportskeeda, the New York Jets is the state's most popular team.
It's worth noting that the Sportskeeda report came out this year (November 2022) because if this were 5-10 years ago, there would be no way, the Patriots would not top that list. It should also be said that not everyone agrees with the Sportskeeda's take. NBC Sports released a similar report a month earlier (September 2022) that said the Pats are the #1 team in the state.
So, who got it right?
The national leader in fans, continues to be America's team, the Dallas Cowboys. Here is the rest of the Top 10 according to NBC Sports:
- Dallas Cowboys
- New England Patriots
- Green Bay Packers
- Pittsburgh Steelers
- Philadelphia Eagles
- Kansas City Chiefs
- San Francisco 49ers
- Chicago Bears
- Las Vegas Raiders
- Cleveland Browns
This would normally be the time when I would take a shot at the Dallas Cowboys but I'm a Raiders fan, and it's not time to throw stones, yet. However, they were on the right side of the one of the wildest games in NFL history recently.
As an NFL fan, who lives in CT, I find it frustrating that the state does not have it's own pro team. Let me rephrase, I find it frustrating that the state of CT and the NFL have zero immediate plans to even talk about putting a team here. The cities that are most often associated with rumors of inevitable expansion are:
- London
- Mexico City
- Frankfurt
That is correct, the NFL would rather go to the U.K, Mexico and Germany before considering bringing their giant ATM machine to Connecticut. Hey, at least we're still the insurance capital of the world, that is still a thing, right?
