According to MSN, what it means to be “rich” depends heavily on your zip code — and if you live in Connecticut, the bar is set pretty high.

A new report highlighted by Visual Capitalist breaks down how much money you need to earn to land in the top 10% of households in each state. Nationally, the number sits around $210,000 a year. That’s the income it took in 2024 to be considered among the wealthiest 10% of Americans. Just a few years ago, before pandemic inflation went wild, that number was closer to $170,000. So yeah — the goalposts moved.

But here’s where it gets interesting for us.

In Connecticut, you need to earn about $344,400 a year to crack the top 10%. Let that sink in. That’s more than triple what many middle-class households bring in. Over in New York, the number is slightly lower at $327,400 — which feels like a rare moment where Connecticut can say, “See? Not the worst.”

The only place that truly blows everyone out of the water is Washington, D.C., where you need a jaw-dropping $635,000 a year to be considered “rich.” That’s Monopoly money.

Why the big differences? Cost of living. States like Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York are just more expensive. Housing, property taxes, everyday goods — it all adds up. Meanwhile, in states with lower living costs, you can reach “rich” status at under $200,000.

The bigger picture? Wealth at the top has grown significantly in recent years, especially thanks to rising home values and the stock market. But the gap between the very wealthy and everyone else continues to widen.

So next time someone says, “Oh, theyre rich,” just remember — in Connecticut, that word comes with a $344,400 price tag.

6 Everyday Connecticut Things That Outsiders Think We’re Totally Making Up

If you live in Connecticut long enough, you forget that the rest of America has no idea what we’re talking about half the time. We drop references to things like “Wethersfield Pizza Wars,” “the Mixmaster,” or “UConn women’s expectations” like they’re universal topics everyone everywhere discusses over coffee. But the moment an out-of-state visits, you remember oh right, none of this is normal. Connecticut is full of quirks that are perfectly reasonable to us and completely baffling to everyone else.
