Tax season can be a real headache, especially for the millions of Americans who owe money to the IRS. On average, U.S. households shell out about $14,000 in federal income taxes each year. But the pain doesn't stop there – the amount you pay can really vary depending on where you live. People in the most tax-heavy states can end up paying more than double what others in lower-tax states pay.

In Connecticut we know nothing is what the sticker says. If you buy a car, you need to figure the crazy amount of money you'll pay in taxes over the life of the car. If you buy a home, on and on we go. "What does it really cost?" That should be etched on the state flag in permanent marker.

WalletHub just dropped their annual study on the states with the highest and lowest tax rates across the U.S., covering all 50 states plus Washington D.C. The rankings range from 1 (best tax rate) to 51 (highest), and unfortunately, Connecticut residents have reason to be concerned. The state came in at #49, meaning we have the 3rd worst tax rate in the country.

Here’s a breakdown of the 10 Worst Tax Rate States:

1. Illinois

2. New York

3. Connecticut

4. New Jersey

5. Pennsylvania

6. Kansas

7. Nebraska

8. Iowa

9. Ohio

10. Texas

The 10 Best States for Tax Rates:

1. Alaska

2. Delaware

3. Wyoming

4. Idaho

5. Montana

6. Nevada

7. Colorado

8. Florida

9. South Carolina

10. District of Columbia

These are the factors they used to make these determinations:

  • Gas Taxes Per Gallon
  • State Cigarette Tax Rates - CT was 4th highest in the nation
  • Food Tax Rates

So, the news could be better, but this isn't a revelation to those of us that live here. Instead, this report is an aggravating reinforcement that the pain is real. What our best options moving forward? Move to Alaska or get really comfortable complaining.
