The common phrase that comes out of my face as I'm passed by a speeding driver is 'Damn kids', but as it turns out a new study has ranked Connecticut as one of the best states in 2025 for teen drivers.

A lot has changed since I got my driver's license in 1985 at the Waterbury DMV, I didn't even have to get a learner's permit, but Connecticut has enacted many new laws regarding teen drivers since. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for those between the ages of 16 & 19, and that age group also faces the highest crash risk.

WalletHub.com has just released Best & Worst States for Teen Drivers (2025) and Connecticut has been ranked at #12. In order to determine their rankings, WalletHub analyzed the teen driving environment in all 50 states across three key dimensions: Safety, Economic Environment, and Driving Laws. Those dimensions were further evaluated using 23 key metrics: Driver Fatalities per 100,000 Teens, Vehicle Miles Traveled per Capita, DUI Violations, Share of Teen Texting While Driving, Quality of Roads, Maximum Cost of a Speeding Ticket, Average Cost of a Car Repair, Average Gas Prices, and a deep dive into the laws protecting fellow drivers.

Teen Drivers in CT Have a Much Safer Driving Environment Than Most

Connecticut has been ranked by WalletHub to be the 12th best state for teen drivers in 2025. We rank #26 in Safety, #27 in Economic Environment, and #6 in Driving Laws. The most interesting metric that I found is that Connecticut has the highest average cost of a car repair in the US for 2025. Our next-door neighbor New York was ranked #1, while here in New England Rhode Island and Massachusetts beat Connecticut in the rankings, coming in at #6 & #8. The worst state for teen drivers in 2025? Montana.
