A Closer Look At Connecticut’s Top Ranking For Homeless Aid
A new study has just come out that has ranked Connecticut as the #1 state in US at helping the homeless in 2025.

SmileHub.org has just released a new study Best States for Homeless People where they've compared and ranked the 50 states in order to determine which states are doing the best job at helping their homeless population, and which states need to improve the most. The study compared the states across three key dimensions: Shelters & Housing Support, Homeless Youth Support, and Food & Health Support. Those dimensions were further evaluated using 20 key metrics and graded on a 100-point scale.

Overall Connecticut ranked at #1 in SmileHub's research with a 69.86 score. Connecticut ranked #1 in Shelters & Housing Support, #15 in Homeless Youth Support, and #1 in Food & Health Support. No other state was close, with the #2 state North Dakota scoring a 61.47, and the worst state South Carolina at a 29.99. As for Connecticut's immediate neighboring states Pennsylvania ranked at #7, New York at #12, Massachusetts at #19, New Jersey at #25, and Rhode Island at #33.
No matter where you live, we encounter someone who is struggling. It's estimated that there are 770,000 people experiencing homelessness in the US in 2025, and the problem is apparent in most of Connecticut. I grew up in Waterbury, live in Torrington, worked in Hartford, New Haven, Danbury, and Norwalk, and I've done a lot of work through my job to help feed and shelter people who are finding their way back to their feet.
