Broadway’s Janet Metz to Perform With Newtown-Area Youth Actors in Bethel
NewArts is an Newtown-based organization that was formed in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook shootings to foster healing through creativity and the performing arts. As part of their program, they stage a couple of huge musicals over the course of the Summer and get as many kids involved as possible.
This weekend, over 75 youth actors and actresses will stage Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's very popular musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The show will be staged at the Walnut Hill Community Church in Bethel, with performances Friday at 7 PM, Saturday at 2 and 7 PM and Sunday at 2 PM. Tickets are available here.
As an added bonus, NewArts has been very successful in recruiting Broadway talents to lend a hand in their productions. For this weekend's "Joseph" shows, Janet Metz, a veteran of Broadway's runs of Fiddler on the Roof, Marie Christine, On the Town, Once Upon a Mattress and the Toronto production of Joseph, will assume the role of narrator for the show.
Since its inception, NewArts has involved over 450 children in their productions. They pride themselves on producing Broadway-caliber shows and channeling creativity into healing. The program was the subject of an acclaimed documentary, "Midsummer in Newtown," that premiered last year at the Tribeca film festival. They should certainly be encouraged on this great mission. Break a leg, gang!
