Bethel Police announced they’ll once again take part in the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, which is scheduled for Saturday, April 25. The idea behind the event is pretty straightforward: give people a safe and controlled place to dispose of medications they no longer need. Instead of letting those pills sit in a cabinet where they could be misused, abused, or accidentally taken by someone who shouldn’t have them, officials want them properly discarded.

If you’ve been meaning to clean out your medicine cabinet, this is a good opportunity to do it.

The medication drop-off will take place at the Bethel Police Department, located at 12 Judd Avenue. Officers will be accepting unused or expired prescriptions between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. That four-hour window is important, because they won’t be able to accept medications outside of those designated hours.

Police are also reminding residents that there are a couple of items they cannot take during the event. Due to state regulations and safety concerns, the department won’t accept needles or radioactive medications, which are sometimes used in certain cancer treatments.

Events like this have become increasingly common across the country as communities try to reduce the risk of prescription drug misuse. Old medications sitting around the house can easily fall into the wrong hands, and the DEA’s take-back program gives people a safe, legal way to get rid of them.

So if you’ve got a bottle or two collecting dust in the bathroom cabinet, April 25 might be the perfect day to finally get rid of it.
