Discovering Detroit’s Deep-dish Pizza Right In Connecticut
My loyalty to Stouffer's French Bread Pizza has been seriously tested this week by a frozen pizza that I purchased from Market 32 in Torrington. It hurts to say this inside the 'Pizza Capital of the World', but the best frozen pizza in Connecticut is actually from Detroit.
As I was waddling through the frozen aisle at Market 32 in my hometown of Torrington over the weekend shopping for the big blizzard that was coming, a new brand of frozen pizza I'd never seen before caught my attention. Maybe it was the price? $14 for a frozen pizza? But oh man, what a bang for your buck.
I've never heard of Buddy's Pizza before, but from the information that I've gathered, they've been a legendary pizza maker in the Detroit, Michigan area since 1946. Sorry Michigan, if you want to impress us, your pizza place has to be around for over a century. But anyway, I bought one of their frozen pizzas, and oh man, is it good.
Detroit-style pizza is deep-dish, like Chicago, but the pie is square, and Buddy's comes in a seasoned aluminum pan which crisps up the edges of the pie nice. It's a texture extravaganza, and the red sauce and cheese are nice and mild. The pan really does a nice job on the edges, and the overall taste was almost restaurant-quality.
Have you noticed that it's almost impossible to find Connecticut's own Mystic Pizza in your frozen aisle? I found one at The Market-Bantam the other week, and it was alongside my other favorite frozen - Newman's Own - Mushroom Trio. Keep them coming to Connecticut and New York Detroit-style pizza makers, one of us Yankees appreciates a different style of pie.
