Feeding Fido Under the Table? Don’t Give Them These Foods!
Those cute, begging faces are tough to resist at Thanksgiving
We've all done it, you slip the dog some turkey, or a few bites of the stank stuffing that Aunt Mary brought over under the table. But there are some foods that you should NEVER feed your pets. Here's a few to totally avoid:
1. Alcohol
We've all seen the drunk dog videos, and yes, they're amusing. But alcohol is a big no-no when it comes to your pup. Alcohol could potentially cause vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, and abnormal blood acidity.
2. Chocolate, Coffee, and Caffeine
All of the above contain methylxanthines, a substance found in cacao, and highly toxic if ingested by your pet. Dark chocolate is much more dangerous than milk chocolate, but in any case, chocolate of any kind may be deadly if ingested.
3. Grapes and Raisins
Although it is not known which component of grapes or raisins are toxic, it is known that ingesting them can cause kidney failure in pets.
4. Milk and Dairy
Pets do not have significant amounts of lactose to break down milk and other dairy products. When ingested, milk and dairy can lead to diarrhea.
5. Poultry Bones
While feeding dogs a bite of turkey is almost second nature at Thanksgiving, be extra careful with the meat and make sure that no bones are in there. If your pet ingests them, the bones can get stuck, and often puncture the stomach or intestines, and potentially cause a life-threatening infection.
You may think you're taking care of your pets by feeding them human foods, but the best bet? Stick with dog or cat food.
