What’s the Mount Rushmore of Cereals? Connecticut’s Favorite Wouldn’t Make the List
The Quaker Oats company introduced Cap'N Crunch in 1963. That means, this year the Captain turns 60.

Recently, Food & Wine magazine named Cap'n Crunch the #8 cereal in America. Food Manufacturing called the Captain the 14th most in-demand cereal in the country in 2021. In the face of ever-changing trends the Captain has done more than survive, it's still an industry leader. Because of the brand's sustained success the Quaker Oats team is throwing the Captain a birthday bash in Palm Spring, CA.
The Captain's birthday party will be held poolside at Margaritaville Resort complete with a DJ, live music and Captain themed brunch menu on the first weekend of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio. The event is free to the public and sounds like an absolute banger.
We talked about this party on the I-95 Morning Show on Monday (4/10/23) and it got us to wondering, what is the Mount Rushmore of cereal?

Just like the real Mount Rushmore, there can only be four names on a list like this. When you're talking about the all-time greats, you need to cut the list off somewhere. Four seems to be the number that ensures there won't be a weak link in the chain. Here are My Top 4 (Rushmore):
- Cap'n Crunch
- Fruity Pebbles
- Cinnamon Toast Crunch
- Frosted Flakes
According to Wish Listed these are the Top 4 (Rushmore) based on 2023 sales figures from Amazon & Wal-Mart:
- Honey Nut Cheerios
- Cinnamon Toast Crunch
- Honey Bunches of Oats
- Special K Red Berries
There are a variety of ways to look at this. I've researched the all-time bestsellers, the current industry leaders, which cereal makes the most overall and who sells the most units. Nowhere on these lists did I see CT's favorite cereal which in a mind boggling choice. In 2022, Zippa named Kix as Connecticut's favorite cereal.
I've lived in Connecticut for many years now and I've never seen a box of Kix in anyone's house, ever. I remember the "Kid Tested, Mother Approved" commercials when I was a kid.
The messaging was clear to me, my mom like this? Oh, I'm never getting that.
If Kix really is the Nutmeg State's leading cereal then we have even worse problems than I though.
Listeners react:
Jay Cadmus - New Fairfield - "My favorite cereal story was when snowboarders first started competing in the Olympics, and they asked one of them if he wanted to be on the Wheaties box if he won. He thought for a moment and said “Do you think I could be on the Count Chocula box?”
Plutarchos - New Milford - "The best cereal is mixing four to five different kinds in a mixing bowl with one of them being grapenuts on top. When you are 3/4 done it's still crunchy..mmm...mmm good."
