Waterbury Police Warn of Thieves Specifically Targeting This Vehicle
The Waterbury Police Department has just sent out an advisory on social media warning a specific group of vehicle owners that their car is being targeted by thieves.
According to the advisory, over the past two weeks there has been a noticeable increase in the theft of rims and tires from 2019-2024 Honda Accord Sport models. No specific locations around the city were given out with the advisory, but Waterbury PD says that the thieves have been breaking windows in order to access wheel lock keys that you may have stored in your glove compartment, so take yours with you inside. Most of the thefts have been reportedly happening during the overnight hours, and the thieves move quickly.
What Can You Do To Deter This Type of Theft?
- Home surveillance and Ring camera owners: Ensure that your system is operational, and your vehicle is parked in view.
- Park in well-lit areas, or even better, indoors or a secure lot
- Do not leave your wheel lock key in your glove box or center console, the thieves know where you hide them.
- What's better than one locked lug nut? Two. Waterbury PD advises that additional wheel locking devices are a good idea.
In just the past few months in Connecticut a man from Hamden was accused of stealing multiple tires and rims from an automobile dealership in Torrington, rim thefts were reported in Berlin, and multiple thefts in Hartford.
If you do have any information on the recent rash of wheel and rim thefts in Waterbury, contact Sgt. Rodriguez of the Waterbury PD at 203-574-6941.
