New Fairfield’s Girl Scout Camp May Close Down
Camp Candlewood is a Girl Scout camp on Candlewood Lake in New Fairfield and the Girl Scouts of Connecticut plan to put it up for sale.
The plan is to sell off Camp Candlewood and Camp Katoya in Milford to raise money to improve other Girl Scout facilities. The Girl Scouts of Connecticut also have plans to shut down camps in Bristol, Lebanon, and Milford.
Honestly, as I began writing this article, I intended to trash the GSOFCT because of their plan to sell New Fairfield's Camp Candlewood. Instead of going off on a rant, I decided to dig deeper into the GSOFCT's website to get the entire story.
What I found was impressive. I can certainly understand why girl scouts and their families affected by the GSOFCT's Long Range Property Plan might be disappointed. The following is the first paragraph explaining said plan:
We are very excited to share with you our Long Range Property Plan for our Council. This plan will help the Council deliver its mission to build girls of courage, confidence, and character through a sustainable and realistic property strategy that will capitalize on current market opportunities while building to support the current and future needs of girls.
If there's a Girl Scout in your family, and you think you're going to be affected by some of the changes that might be on the way, I invite you to read why these changes need to be made. After I took a comprehensive look at the GSOFCT's website, I believe this one phrase says it all:
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.
