Ah yes, the great debate rages on: Who is the best pizzeria in Connecticut? This time the State of Connecticut's Tourism Gods are asking the question in order to judge who should be featured on our state's boldest marketing campaign in decades.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont has announced that the Connecticut Office of Statewide Marketing and Tourism's latest idea the Connecticut Pizza Capital Trail, aimed at luring out of staters into a cheese and carb slumber after eating at our finest pizza joints. As of today, Friday, March 14, 2025, an initial list of over 900 Connecticut pizza restaurants have been listed on Pizzacapitaltrail.com, and you can choose up to ten of them a day, once a day, until the voting ends on May 1, 2025. After May 1, the dough will rise for four months, when in late September the Official Connecticut Pizza Capital Pizza Trail will be unveiled for all of us to critique and share.

I've just cast my first and likely only votes, here are my ten choices for the best pizza in Connecticut, in my opinion, in no particular order, I just think they're unique, or truly the best ten I've had in recent years.

  • Bohemian Pizza - Litchfield
  • Colony Grill - Stamford
  • Domenic's & Vinnie's - Middlebury/Waterbury
  • Domenick & Pia - Waterbury
  • Mystic Pizza (I had to)
  • Roma Pizza (Torrington)
  • Roseland Apizza - Derby
  • Spartan's - Waterbury
  • Zuppardi's - West Haven

And my write in vote, which is a bit unusual, is Frank Pepe - statewide. Pepe's is not included in the initial 900, maybe because they are a given? But Modern, Bar, Sally's and the other usual suspects made the list?
