According to the Patch, Connecticut State Police have announced some sobriety checkpoints that will go up to help reduce drunk driving over the weekend. First, what are sobriety checkpoints, and are they legal? A DUI or sobriety checkpoint is a selected and publicized location where law enforcement officers stop drivers (every driver or a neutral pattern) to detect impairment and prevent alcohol-related accidents, deaths, and injuries...

2. Are DUI Checkpoints Legal in Connecticut?

Yes. In 1996, Connecticut Appellate Court ruled that sobriety checkpoints are constitutionally permissible. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1990 that sobriety checkpoints do not violate the 4th Amendment protection against unreasonable searches and seizures, allowing each state to decide their individual constitutionality. Since then, 38 States (including Connecticut) and the District of Columbia have authorized sobriety checkpoints...

3. Where Are DUI Checkpoints in Connecticut?

They give more information about each, but you get the idea. The Patch goes on to let everyone know where the DUI Checkpoints will be. One will be from 6 pm Sunday till 2 am Monday at the merge of I-91 northbound near exit 16 and Route 15 northbound exit 67 in Meriden.

Another checkpoint announced is in New Haven, Monday into Tuesday at the I-91 exit 3 on and off ramps near Orange Street. This one will be from 8:30 pm Monday till Tuesday at 3:30 am.

In addition to these checkpoints, the state police will be in full force to ensure the highways are safe from drunk drivers this holiday weekend.
