For whatever reason, the fight was between Walmart customers and the security staff members, and someone reportedly threatened to "go get a gun". Walmart security attempted to get the suspects to stop joyriding the motorized shopping carts, and that's when the fight broke out.

Investigators also learned that the suspects had been joyriding inside the store and had managed to remove two BB guns from boxes and stashed them in their pants. Morales and Cruz allegedly jumped into a Honda with Massachusetts plates and zoomed around the Walmart parking lot before speeding off.

Police later found the suspects on Willow Street in Waterbury. Cruz was charged with second-degree robbery along with seven other charges. His bond was set at $100,000. Lesser charges were filed against Morales, and his bond was set at $60,000.
