Ridgefield Police Warn of Old Scam Making New Rounds
According to the Ridgefield Police Department, scam phone calls are making the rounds again — and some of them are designed to sound just scary and urgent enough to make people panic before thinking it through.

Police say they’ve received multiple reports of calls where scammers pretend to be a family member who’s been arrested and suddenly needs bail money right now. Another popular version claims you missed jury duty and now owe a fine. The goal is the same every time: rattle you, rush you, and get your money before you realize something doesn’t add up.
The important thing to remember is this — legitimate law enforcement, courts, banks, and government agencies are not going to demand immediate payment over the phone. They’re also not going to ask for gift cards, cryptocurrency, or other hard-to-trace payment methods. If someone is pushing you to pay that way, that’s a massive red flag.

Ridgefield PD is urging residents to slow things down and protect their personal information. Never give out sensitive details like Social Security numbers, banking info, or passwords unless you are 100 percent sure who you’re dealing with. If a call feels off, hang up and verify it through a trusted source, like calling a family member directly or looking up an official phone number on your own.
It also helps to lock things down on your end. Using strong, unique passwords for different accounts and turning on two-factor authentication can make it much harder for scammers to get access. Keeping an eye on your bank and credit card statements is another simple habit that can catch problems early before they spiral.
Most importantly, don’t let anyone rush you into sending money. Scammers rely on urgency and fear. Taking a breath, asking questions, and double-checking details can make all the difference.
If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t — and Ridgefield PD wants residents to know it’s always okay to hang up and verify before doing anything else.
